Transformation of Buddhist Mandalas into a Virtual Reality Installation

Abstract Technology can translocate traditional art into interactive, immersive experiences. At the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, authors transformed Tibetan Buddhist mandalas a 3D virtual reality mandala installation. Furthering this project, they externalized an analog meditative experience by recording electroencephalograms that dynamically modulated visual scene. The use neurofeedback allowed fluctuations in alpha power to drive intensity fog obscuring mandala. This aimed give sense clearing with one’s mind meditation-like state. collaboration demonstrated how technology intended for scientific may be adapted artistic installation enriches visitor experience.
